How to Calculate Attendance Percentage

Four simple steps to check your attendance, find your bunk limit, or plan recovery before exams.

Enter Total Classes Held

Type the total lectures or practicals conducted this semester. Check your college portal or ask your class representative.

Enter Classes Attended

Enter only the classes you personally attended. Find this in your attendance register or student portal.

Set Your Minimum %

Choose 75% for UGC, AICTE, and CBSE. Select a higher value if your college or university enforces 80% or 85%.

Read Instant Results

See your current attendance %, status, exact safe bunks remaining, and how many classes to attend to recover.

Attendance Percentage Formulas Explained

All three calculators above use these exact formulas. Understanding them lets you plan your semester without surprises.

Formula 1 — Attendance Percentage
Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100
Example: You attended 57 classes out of 76 held →
(57 ÷ 76) × 100 = 75.0% — exactly at the UGC minimum.
Formula 2 — Safe Bunks (How Many Classes Can I Skip?)
Safe Bunks = ⌊ (Attended × 100 − Target% × Total) ÷ Target% ⌋
Example: 64 attended, 80 total, 75% target →
⌊ (6400 − 6000) ÷ 75 ⌋ = ⌊ 400 ÷ 75 ⌋ = 5 safe bunks. Bunking a 6th class drops you to 74.4% — below the limit.
Formula 3 — Recovery Classes (How Many Classes Must I Attend?)
Recovery Classes = ⌈ (Target% × Total Classes − Attended × 100) ÷ (100 − Target%) ⌉
Example: 52 attended, 80 total, 75% target →
⌈ (6000 − 5200) ÷ 25 ⌉ = ⌈ 32 ⌉ = 32 consecutive classes needed to reach 75%.

Minimum Attendance Requirements — India

Reference guide for minimum attendance percentage required by different boards, regulatory bodies, and institution types in India.

Board / Institution Min. Attendance Notes
UGC (All Degree Colleges)75%Mandatory UGC directive — applies to all affiliated colleges nationwide
AICTE (Engineering / MBA / MCA)75%Applicable to all AICTE-approved technical institutions
CBSE (Class 11 & 12)75%Required for board examination eligibility
NMC / MCI (MBBS / Medical)75%Separate 75% for theory and practicals; clinical postings included
BCI (LLB / Law)70%Bar Council of India minimum; many colleges enforce 75%
ICSE / ISC Schools75%Board exam eligibility linked to attendance
State Boards (most states)75%Some states allow 65% with approved medical documentation
IIT / NIT (Undergraduate)75–80%Institute-specific; de-registration from course is a real risk at IITs
IIM / Top B-Schools75–85%Varies; many enforce strict policies tied to placement eligibility
Private Deemed Universities75–85%Institution-specific; check your academic handbook
Distance / ODL ProgrammesVariesNot always mandatory for registered students; verify separately
⚠ Medical Relaxation: Most Indian universities allow a 5–10% attendance relaxation for documented medical reasons, which can reduce the effective minimum to 65–70%. This requires a valid certificate from a registered doctor submitted within the institution’s deadline. It is not automatic — it must be formally applied for and approved by the Principal, Dean, or Academic Committee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Formula: Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100

Example: Your college held 76 classes this semester and you attended 57 of them —
(57 ÷ 76) × 100 = 75.0%

Use the Attendance % tab above to skip the calculation entirely. Just enter your numbers and get an instant result with colour-coded status.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) and AICTE mandate a minimum of 75% attendance in all affiliated degree colleges and technical institutions across India. CBSE schools also require 75% for Class 11–12 board examination eligibility.

Some IITs, NITs, and top private universities enforce 80–85%. Always verify the exact rule in your institution’s academic calendar or student handbook.
Safe Bunks = ⌊ (Attended × 100 − Target% × Total) ÷ Target% ⌋

Example: 64 attended, 80 total, 75% target —
⌊ (6400 − 6000) ÷ 75 ⌋ = 5 safe bunks

After 5 bunks your attendance becomes 64/85 = 75.3% — still just above the limit. A 6th bunk takes you to 74.4%, which is below 75%.

Use the Bunk Counter tab above for your exact live bunk limit.
Use the Recovery Planner tab — enter how many classes remain this semester, and it tells you the exact number you must attend (out of those remaining) to cross the 75% threshold.

The formula: ⌈ (Target% × New Total − Attended × 100) ÷ 100 ⌉ where New Total = current total + upcoming classes.

If even attending every remaining class is not enough (the Recovery Planner will flag this clearly), speak with your faculty advisor about a formal condonation application or medical relaxation.
Falling below the minimum attendance threshold in Indian colleges can result in:

1. Debarment from semester examinations — the most common and immediate consequence
2. Academic detention or year back — you may be required to repeat the entire semester or year
3. Loss of scholarships and merit-based benefits
4. Visa implications for international students enrolled in India
5. Placement and internship restrictions at many reputed institutions

In some colleges, students between 65–75% may apply for condonation by submitting a written appeal to the Principal. Approval is at the institution’s discretion and not guaranteed.
Mathematically yes — 75% means you can miss up to 25%, which is 1 in every 4 classes. But this applies to the running cumulative total, not to each individual week or each subject separately.

The mistake many students make: they assume they have “1 free bunk per 4 classes” each week and stop tracking the total. By mid-semester they discover they are already in the danger zone. Use the Bunk Counter above to track your real-time bunk limit as the semester progresses — not just at the start.
Most Indian universities allow a 5–10% attendance relaxation for medical reasons, reducing the effective minimum to 65–70%. This requires:

• A valid certificate from a registered doctor (government hospital certificates carry more weight)
• Submission within the deadline specified by your institution
• Formal approval from the Principal, Dean, or Academic Committee

This relaxation is not automatic. It is discretionary and varies by institution. Many colleges also hold a formal Condonation Committee meeting — appearing in person (where applicable) significantly improves approval chances.
Yes. The formula (Attended ÷ Total) × 100 is universal — it works for any institution, board, or country. Set the target % to match your institution’s requirement.

CBSE / ICSE / State Board schools → 75%
Engineering (AICTE) → 75%
Medical (NMC) → 75% (theory and practicals calculated separately)
IIT / NIT → 75–80% (check your institute’s academic norms)
Private universities → 75–85% (set custom target in the calculator)
